Data Analysis in the United Nations Migration Agency

Statistics Meets Humanitarian Response and Policy-Making

Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration, and in 2016 has become the United Nations’ (UN) Migration Agency. IOM works closely with governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental partners. It promotes the orderly and humane management of migration, as well as international cooperation when addressing migration challenges, and provides humanitarian assistance to migrants in need.

In 2004, IOM created the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) – a data collection system for the monitoring of populations displaced by crises and their needs. The DTM thereby provides critical information to decision-makers and responders during crises, and more recently also contributes to a better understanding of regional migration flows. First conceptualized to monitor internal displacement in Iraq, the DTM has since been gradually adapted for implementation in contexts of conflict, natural disaster, complex emergencies and protracted crises. As of December 2018, it was active in 59 countries, and monitored the movements of over 33 million individuals through a network of over 300 professional staff, 4000 enumerators and 128,000 key informants.

In my presentation, I will give an overview of migration data analysis and modelling in IOM. Furthermore, and taking my own experience as an example, I will discuss opportunities for Physicists to work in the Humanitarian Sector, as well as aspects of day-to-day tasks and challenges encountered when doing so.
