The sequential multiple ionization of an atom at FELs: from first observation towards to complete experiment.
The sequential multiple ionization, e.g. step-wise absorption of a photon creating a singly charged ion followed by absorption another photon from the same pulse leading to a doubly charged ion, is one of the simplest non-linear process observed at FEL facilities. It takes place either separately or as a trigger of more complicate processes such as Auger cascade, double core-hole forming, etc. High intensity of FEL pulses allows to measure electron angular distribution and angular correlation in addition to photoelectron spectrum. Since FEL implementation a number of unique experiments have been done revealing details of atomic and ionic structure, new autoionizing states, allowing observation angular correlations or perform a complete experiment even extendable to resonance region or behind the dipole approximation. In the report the illustrative examples of theoretical investigations for a few realized experiments will be given.
